June 3rd is World Bicycle Day, a very important means of transport for sport as its impact on the environment is 100% natural and therefore completely sustainable for humans. This clean, ecological and affordable means of transport not only contributes to environmental stewardship but also benefits health.
Sport and physical activity have been shown to be factors that positively influence the physical and mental health of the population and their practice as a healthy habit can contribute to preventive levels based on the promotion of healthy lifestyles. Specifically, studies have shown that the practice of sport brings with it multiple benefits for physical health, including the prevention of cardiovascular risks, obesity, chronic diseases, cancer, osteoporosis and degenerative diseases such as dementia and Alzheimer; and for mental health, reduces anxiety, depression, stress, improves social skills and cognitive abilities, among others.
In addition to the multiple health benefits, a more active society that makes use of sustainable environments can generate other positive results such as reduced consumption of fossil fuels, cleaner air, less congested and safer roads and lower noise levels, thus reducing air pollution in big cities. But also providing safe infrastructure for physical activities, such as cycling, is the way to achieve greater health equity, as the most vulnerable populations can make cycling their means of transport, thus contributing not only to their health but also to greater equity.
From HORUS we want to highlight the importance of highlighting and promoting the use of means of transport such as the bicycle, emphasizing the need to promote green areas and transport infrastructures that consider the existence of bicycle lanes, thus encouraging sustainable development, promoting physical and mental health and wellbeing and preventing diseases.
