The public health education campaign ‘The Hunt for the Silent Killer’ in Rijeka- HORUS and MEDRI

From 1 to 6 October 2024, the public health education campaign ‘The Hunt for the Silent Killer’ took place in Rijeka, Croatia, the city where one of our pilot projects is being carried out.

A campaign with the goal of raising awareness about hypertension, highlighting risk factors, and inviting everyone – all professional societies, citizen associations, and the entire population de Rijeka to join them.

This campaign was presented at the Rijeka City Hall on Tuesday, October 1, by leading professionals such as prof. Ph.D. Goran Palčevski, academician Bojan Jelaković, president of the Croatian Hypertension League, prof. Ph.D. Ivan Pećin, vice-president of the Croatian Society for Atherosclerosis, prof. Ph.D. Vanja Vasiljev from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Rijeka and assistant professor, Ph.D. Željko Linšak, Director of the Teaching Institute for Public Health of the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County.

On Saturday morning, 5 October 2024, this public health campaign was launched in the centre of Rijeka and was very well received by the city’s population.

During the campaign, the citizens of Rijeka were informed about the HORUS project and the future steps of the project, as well as being helped to take care of their health and wellbeing by measuring their blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar.

Members of the HORUS-MEDRI research team have been working for a long time with the academic Bojan Jelaković, the director of this campaign.

The MEDRI team has conducted a large number of outpatient visits throughout Croatia, especially in places where they have limited medical care or in places that have been devastated by earthquakes (such as Petrinja and Majur) and also in large companies such as PIK Vrbovec, where employees have been measured for blood pressure, ECG, central blood pressure, thyroid ultrasound, 24-hour urine analysis to determine salt intake, BMI, complete blood analysis, etc.

During these outpatient visits, new cases of hypertension, thyroid disorders, new cases of diabetes and much more are detected.

Together with the Croatian Hypertension League, the MEDRI team is committed to reducing the morbidity and mortality of the Croatian population from cardiovascular diseases, especially hypertension.

In addition to this, a document of cooperation between the City of Rijeka and the Croatian Hypertension League was signed at the Rijeka City Hall on October 4th, making Rijeka the first formal partner city of the Croatian Hypertension League.

A very productive week for HORUS and the Rijeka Pilot, together with our partner MEDRI.
