Today 4th of March, is World Obesity Day, a day to raise awareness about one of the most pressing health challenges of our time: obesity.
But, why is this day so important?
Obesity is a major risk factor for non-communicable diseases (NCDs) like cardiovascular diseases and type 2 diabetes. These conditions are responsible for millions of deaths globally and have a significant impact on quality of life. But did you know that our urban environments play a huge role in this growing epidemic?
Research has shown that the environments we live in – from the availability of green spaces to the walkability of our streets – influence our daily behaviors, which in turn affect our health. It’s not just about what we eat, but where we live and how we move.
HORUS Project:
This is where HORUS comes in! Our project is dedicated to creating healthier urban environments to combat the rising prevalence of obesity and other NCDs. By focusing on the built environment – such as improving transportation infrastructure, enhancing walkability, and increasing access to greenspace – we aim to make it easier for vulnerable communities, especially low-income populations, migrants, and ethnic minorities, to lead healthier lifestyles.
The solutions we’re developing at HORUS are designed to empower individuals to make the most of the urban spaces they inhabit, reducing risk factors associated with obesity and NCDs. We’re helping cities transform into places that encourage movement, healthy eating, and overall well-being.
So, what can we do about it? We can start by rethinking how we design our cities. Healthy urban planning is key to addressing the obesity crisis and ensuring a healthier future for everyone.
Join us in making cities healthier for all. Check out how HORUS is taking action in Spain, Croatia, and the Netherlands to fight obesity and its impact on urban health!
